Conference Overview

Announcing IPAY’s 1st CultureCrew Festival: a virtual global gathering around youth-selected performing arts from October 11 - 22, 2021

Featuring a selection of youth-chosen productions and a series of developmental learning opportunities. Starting on March 10, artists creating performances for young people are invited to submit videos of their live and virtual productions to be adjudicated and possibly selected by CultureCrew. CultureCrew will be made of up to 15 teenage members representing Philadelphia and other cities around the world. Work selected by CultureCrew will be featured as Virtual Showcases or Virtual Spotlights for the duration of the festival for all registered delegates to watch “on demand” anytime. CultureCrew will be responsible for deciding who has a full length Showcase and who has a short Spotlight video.

As a part of the two-week virtual delegate series, delegates will watch videos of CultureCrew’s selected shows and attend virtual Kindling sessions focused on youth-adjudicated performing arts. Delegates will include agents, presenters, artists, and other arts professionals from around the world. You’ll learn in real time with other international professionals and develop new approaches to centering youth in your professional practice.

Agents, presenters, and other professional PYA stakeholders will be able to engage directly with young people by serving as mentors or volunteers during the summer selection process, submitting their shows to be reviewed during the CultureCrew selection panel, leading Kindling sessions, and/or attending the festival as a delegate.

For artists creating productions for young people, being selected by youth members CultureCrew is a strong point of attention for them. Their work is more likely to be seen by presenters, agents, education directors, festival directors, and other artists when featured by IPAY. During IPAY’s virtual Showcase in Place conference, shows selected by CultureCrew received more views than any other set of shows.

Showcase Criteria

SELECTION CRITERIA

When making final selections for the festival, CultureCrew will choose the productions they find most engaging for young people - their peers and those younger than they are. They will be encouraged to consider the following criteria, developed by IPAY, for assessing applications:

  1. High degree of artistry within the genre and specific to intended age group, as well as success in communicating to and engaging with young audiences/families.
  2. The work demonstrates an overall artistic rationale with regard to form, direction, music, choreography, design, technical aspects and casting.
  3. The work is created and performed by professionals.
  4. The work is fresh, innovative, relevant, reflective of our communities, and appropriate for youth, young adult and family audiences. Commitment from the artist or company to equity, diversity, and inclusion and evidence of an anti-oppressive artistic practice.
  5. Consideration of tourability and marketability; and educational merit.
  6. Overall balance within all work selected to accommodate diversity in age range, genre, scale (audience capacity), and geographic point of origin.

Keep in mind this is a subjective and dynamic process. CultureCrew will select the productions that they decide are the most compelling, urgent, and valuable for other young people to experience. They will consider the overall quality of each work, and strive to find an overall balance of work represented (balancing target age range; genre; scale of production or intended audience capacity; etc). They will also be encouraged to consider tourability, marketability, diversity in all its forms, educational merit, cost, etc, when making their final decisions.

For more information about CultureCrew and their selection process, please see the IPAY website.

SUPPORT MATERIALS

The following support materials are required: two high resolution photos, a biography, a touring itinerary (or history of previous touring engagements), and a technical rider (option to upload as one file or in three separate files; stage, lights/video, and sound.) If selected, the photos provided will be used by IPAY for all promotional purposes.

YOUR FILES

In addition to the required files, we recommend providing other support materials such as letters of reference, scripts, etc. which you can upload via the Supplementary File (under Additional Information) or within the EPK (electronic press kit)/One-Sheet option (under Promotional Files).

YOUR VIDEOS

A full length high-quality video of the complete piece is highly encouraged. This is the strongest way to present your work to our international audience, and it is the best way for CultureCrew to evaluate your production. If your work is selected by CultureCrew, one of the videos you submit will be featured in the virtual festival. Both videos could be used for promotional purposes.

You must submit a video that is intended to be shown publicly to represent your show on our secure video platform during the festival. If you do not have a full length video of your work, at a minimum you are required to submit a 5 minute video segment that best represents your production. You can also provide specific timestamps as recommendations for CultureCrew to view.

IPAY accepts YouTube or Vimeo links. Please set the link to PUBLIC, or provide a password in your application.

CultureCrew will meet virtually to select work during the months of June and July, 2021. Artist/companies that have been selected will be notified in August 2021.
